Pier Voulkos

 

Pier Voulkos is the daughter of Peggy and Peter Voulkos.

Born in Helena, Montana, Pier spent her first years at the Archie Bray Foundation surrounded by bricks and clay.

Her first job was as a teaching assistant to the artists who worked the children’s programs at Studio One and Two in Oakland, California. Later becoming an Arts and Crafts Specialist for kids supporting her dance career in New York City at the 92nd Street Y and the Children’s Art Carnival in Harlem.

Voulkos received a BFA from California College of Arts and Crafts in 1975 majoring in ceramics under Viola Frey.

She is married to Daniel Peters.

As a professional dancer in New York City, she danced for Donald Byrd and Daniel Peters among others. She retired from Mark Morris Dance Group in 1989.

Pier’s design career has spanned 45+ years and includes designs for theatrical sets and costumes for theater and dance.

Working with Polymer Clay as a bead maker and jewelry artist, she has pieces in several prominent museums including the Musée des Arts Décoratifs de Montréal, Racine Art Museum, Museum of Arts and Design, and the National Design Museum Smithsonian Institution.

Along with her husband Daniel, she has had a career as an Argentine Tango dancer, teacher and performer. She is also a founding member of Tango Con*Fusión a woman’s tango performance group.

Since 2002 she has been archivist and co-manager of the family estate of Peter Voulkos and Ann Adair Voulkos.

Currently she partners with Daniel Peters and Clay Jensen in actively keeping The Dome Center for Art, Music, and Dance alive and kicking.
